Tradecraft: Paula Patton Accepts Impossible Mission
Deadline reports that the latest actress to come aboard Mission: Impossible 4 (or whatever they end up calling it, which supposedly won't be that) is Paula Patton. Patton, 34, has had roles in Precious, Idlewild and Deja Vu. She joins Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg in the Brad Bird-directed, J.J. Abrams-produced sequel/reboot. Despite the claims that this one will eschew the team formula the previous entry barely embraced in favor of a dual lead approach (Cruise and Renner), the ever-expanding cast sure makes it sound like a team movie... According to Deadline's Michael Fleming, "Patton will play a young operative who works with Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt character." Fleming also asserts that Cruise and Abrams "always envisioned [the fourth entry] as a franchise reboot," but that sounds like some revisionist spin. We didn't start hearing these "reboot" rumblings until Knight and Day tanked at the domestic box office.
